Oil on Board, Guy de Montlaur, 1918-1974
An outstanding abstract piece featuring thickly worked paint strokes in contrasting colours where light plays against a dark backdrop alluding to a mountain scape. Montlaur fought in WW2 and his work can often depict scenes and conjure traumatic feelings from this time. Kandinsky and Ucello were said to be his masters and you can see the inspiration of both in this work. This untitled painting, is from Montlaurs lyrical abstraction period. This took place after 1961 when he had returned to work in the French navy. It meant he was unable to work on painting other than at weekends or evenings. Paradoxically this had dramatic effect on his output and creativity. It's a rare find. We have had the piece newly set in a splined walnut tray frame by art framers Brider & Bull.
